Over 400 people turned out Sunday night to walk the streets of the Mt. Pleasant area of Cleveland, singing hymns and carrying candles. The vigil was held as a memorial to the victims of suspected serial killer, Anthony Sowell.
The walk and vigil was followed by a prayer service at Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church.
So far, 11 decomposing bodies have been found in Sowell’s house and seven of those have been identified. For a list of those identified, click here.
Pastor of the Mt. Olive church, Reverend Larry Harris, said the victims “…have brought us together… And we are not through coming together. Their lives were not lived in vain.”
John Hunter, whose sister Amelda Hunter, and cousin, Crystal Dozier, were identified as two of the alleged serial killer’s victims, joined in the walk from the church service to the Sowell home on Imperial Avenue.
“It’s a blessing to have everyone come together like this. We need more of that But the unity is not here,” said Hunter. “Once we disperse, everybody is going to go their own separate ways. And it will take a big tragedy for it to come together again. It should not be like that.”
The Imperial Families Memorial Fund has been set up by the Mt. Pleasant Ministerial Alliance. Donations to the fund can be made at U.S Bank branches. In addition, First Coast News reports that the Alliance plans a benefit for the families, tentatively scheduled to take place on Nov. 21.
