When Jaycee Lee Dugard was finally found and questioned about her identity after she had been missing for 18 years, a government report says she lied about who she was and defended her alleged captor, Phillip Garrido.

Radar reports that after Jaycee admitted to authorities that she knew of Garrido’s past as a convicted sex offender, she also said that he was a “changed man” and a “great person who was good with her kids.”

Jaycee disappeared in 1991 after being abducted at a school bus stop in South Lake Tahoe, Calif. Garrido and his wife, Nancy, have been accused of kidnapping, raping, and holding Jaycee captive. They have pleaded not guilty to the charges.

When Jaycee initially talked to police, she claimed her name was Alyssa and told law enforcement she did not seek help because she feared an abusive spouse she left behind in Minnesota five years before, according to the report.

After several more interviews, she finally admitted that Garrido was the father of her two daughters.

The report indicates that only after Garrido confessed he had abducted Jaycee did she identify “…herself as Jaycee Dugard and confirmed that she had been kidnapped and raped by Garrido.”

According to Radar, the report also details how Garrido’s parole agents dropped the ball when it came to suspicious signs at the Garrido home, which could have led authorities to discover Jaycee’s presence at the residence years earlier. These include ignoring a 12-year-old girl, who was at Garrido’s home during a parole visit; wires running from Garrido’s house to the backyard compound where Jaycee and her daughters lived; failing to speak to neighbors; and neglecting to use GPS information.
