Shaniya Davis, 5, went missing from her Fayetteville, NC home on Tuesday morning according to police. Cumberland County authorities now believe foul play is involved in her disappearance.
Shaniya’s mother, Antoinette Davis, told police the last time she saw her daughter was about 5:30 a.m. Tuesday morning when she placed her on the couch.
An Amber Alert was issued for the girl just before noon.
The mother’s boyfriend, sister, Shaniya’s 7-year-old brother and an infant were all at home when the little girl vanished.
Theresa Chance, a spokesperson for the Fayetteville police said “There is definitely something not right about the situation. Foul play is suspected.”
Chance continued “The circumstances surrounding her disappearance are very odd. A 5-year-old usually…[is] not awake at 5:30 a.m. normally, and they just wouldn’t leave their home… If she would have wandered out of her home, she would be around here somewhere.”
Authorities noted that the family has a history with the Department of Social Services in the area. “There may have been major DSS issues with this family—who has custody, switching back and forth,” said Chance.
AHN reports the police served a warrant at the home, but found nothing that would indicate what happened to Shaniya.
However, on July 21, authorities obtained a warrant to search the Davis residence and narcotics were found at the home.
Three sex offenders live in Shaniya’s neighborhood, but have been interviewed by police and are not considered suspects, according to Chance.
Shaniya is described as 3 feet tall, weighing 40 pounds. She has brown hair and brown eyes and was last seen wearing a blue T-shirt with pink underwear. She is thin and has a scar on her foot.
Authorities are asking anyone with information to call Fayetteville police at 910-433-1856.
