After 25 years, the unsolved murder of 9-year-old Mei Leung has been linked to the brutal and infamous serial killer, Richard Ramirez, aka the ‘Night Stalker.’
After the passage of time, the disturbing case was placed in the San Francisco Police Department’s cold case files.
Inspector Holly Pera said the case has haunted her for over two decades, according to CBS News. On Thursday, Mei’s case was finally linked to the ‘Night Stalker’ through DNA.
Pera said “I was a new police officer at the time. That’s part of the reason that the case was relooked at. It’s the type of case as a new officer, a case involving a little girl that you don’t forget.”
Ramirez is currently on death row for 13 Los Angeles-area murders committed in 1984 and 1985. Southern Californians were terrorized by horrific murder scenes filled with satanic symbols and carnage. Ramirez reportedly entered his victims’ homes using unlocked doors and windows.
CBS reports that although Ramirez was connected to murders in the Northern California-area, he was never tried for them. In 1985, just prior to his capture and arrest, San Francisco couple, Peter and Barbara Pan, were shot to death in their home. The murders were thought to be the work of the 'Night Stalker.'
Mei’s murder occurred in the basement of a San Francisco hotel where she and her family lived. Ramirez was reportedly staying at hotels in the same neighborhood during that time.
When the case was recently revisited, crime lab technicians were able to extract DNA samples from some of the items collected at the murder scene. According to CBS, Ramirez’s DNA profile in the existing Combined DNA Index System matched the DNA collected at the scene of Mei’s murder.
A new DNA sample was obtained from Ramirez on Wednesday to confirm the current match. Once confirmed, the district attorney will determine if new charges will be filed against the convicted murderer.
