Fun for the Kids in Palm Springs
Palm Springs Aerial Tramway
Ride the tram up to the Mount San Jacinto State Park and Wilderness where you can have a picnic lunch or go on a scenic hike. The Tram climbs two and a half miles in about ten minutes and you get some fantastic views of the surrounding area. The kids will have a blast along the nature walk in long valley or you can test their endurance on any of a number of the 54 miles of trails in the area.
Red Jeep Tours
As your kids are strapped to the back of a jeep and headed into the desert they’ll learn about the fauna and history of the area surrounding Palm Springs as well as the geologic activity that has helped to create this dynamic ecosystem. Where you see wasteland the native tribes saw resources, you’ll soon learn that everything in the desert has its proper use. The tour takes you along the San Andreas Fault and you get to hike right in the chasms created by the tectonic activity that shapes California today. The kids get to pan for gold, see water coming right up from deep in the earth and have a four wheeling adventure in one convenient package.
Indian Canyon
If you have never understood the allure of Palm Springs you’ll get a real education on why the Cahuilla Indians chose to settle this land. The Indian canyons area is not only scenic but it provides so many historic and archeological points of interest that you’ll spend quite a bit of time enjoying the canyons, trails and streams. The kids will probably get wet, you’ll have some fabulous pictures and you’ll be amazed at the amount of water that finds it’s way to the surface even in the middle of summer.
Living Desert
If you can imagine one place that attempts to describe the wonders of the World’s desert areas, The Living Desert in Palm Desert near Palm Springs does an incredible job of just that. The 1500+ acre park houses a 200 acre zoo and garden as well as 1000 acres of preserved wilderness. You’ll get an education in the desert ecosystems of North America, Africa and the Middle East. The kids will enjoy the discovery room as well as the McManus small animal exhibit.
