14 people have died of H1N1 in Utah in this flu season

14 people have died in Utah from H1N1 so far in this flu season, up from 12 people last week. This number does not include the 18 people who died prior to the current flu season that began September 1, 2009, according to the Utah Department of Health (UDOH) in the most current report released Wednesday.
The two people that died in the last week from H1N1 were women between the ages of 50 and 64, one in Salt Lake County and from the Weber-Morgan Health District.
The good news is that the spread of H1N1 swine flu in Utah is declining, at least for the last week, according to the UDOH report. The percentage of patients who came into clinics with flu like symptoms dropped by half, and H1N1 hospitalizations had a dramatic decrease as well.
The percentage of patients visiting clinics with flu like symptoms dropped to 4.5% for the week ending October 31, down from 9.4% the week before. 59 people were hospitalized with H1N1 last week, compared to 98 the week before.
In Utah, the H1N1 flu is still widespread. Health officials still recommend getting the vaccine when it is available, and also taking preventive steps to avoid catching the flu.
78,600 doses of vaccine are expected to arrive in Utah during the next week. Everyone who wants the flu vaccine should have it by the end of November.
