Claremont Graduate University recently announced a new MBA/MPH degree, one of only ten programs that now exist in the US. The demand for healthcare workers is great and those with business backgrounds are the most needed. This is a field expected to grow even more, with the changes in U.S. healthcare policy and the aging of the baby boom population. “In addition to health being the largest sector of the economy, it is the only major sector that is continuing to grow and for which job opportunities remain good—and they will be better as the economic stimulus package plays out,” said C. Anderson Johnson, Dean of the School of Community and Global Health.
According to Nick Johnson, Assistant Director of Media Relations at Claremont Graduate University, the program was developed in response to a direct need for public health professionals who have leadership backgrounds. The program is designed to be multidisciplinary: using many different academic roots for a creative problem-solving approach. “The hope is that many of our university’s ‘schools’ such as our ethics-based management school (The Drucker School) or our evaluation program (our School of Behavioral and Organizational Sciences) can combine disciplines for a unique approach to a new type of degree that will be relevant and progressive.”
The program is looking for students who have demonstrated exceptional ability and a compelling interest in combining business and public health. Students are required to complete a 76-credit hour program, consisting of 56 units of core courses, 16 units of concentration courses, and 4 units of elective coursework. Students admitted to the dual degree program will take a combination of Drucker and Community and Global Health courses each semester. As part of the M.B.A. coursework, students may pursue concentrations in Finance, Strategy, Leadership, Global Management or marketing. Or students may pursue the Leadership and Management concentration in the M.P.H. curriculum.
Classes include leadership, grant writing, health services, environmental and occupational health, biostatistics, epidemiology, field training, accounting and more.
