For small companies, or even individuals with the need to track customers, clients and individuals, Act has been the software of choice. Version 6, regarded by many as “the essential software” in its class was the standard for small to medium sized concerns.
However, after some sweeping changes, one particular version irked everyone. Now with the latest version out, Act 2010, the stakes are high and the changes this iteration brings are significant.
Hands down one of the most powerful of its type, Act 2010 not only gets its act together, it more than likely will assist you in getting yours. Sporting a sleeker more contemporary look that its predecessor, the 2010 model is evident that Sage has been listening to users’ concerns. The most significant overhaul for the program in years, nearly everything about the program is aimed at making it user friendly. The most obvious are the help files and the inclusion of a welcome window that makes accessing and learning features easy.
Offering a plethora of options, vids and tools, Act has always been feature rich. Along with that it has also been something of a burden to figure out where parts and pieces fit together. This time around, Sage has done an excellent of job of helping newbie’s get a running start. For professionals accustomed to Act, having a respectable welcome window and ease of operation will not only make it easier for co-workers, it may turn the most luddite of workers into productive parts of the workflow.
Taking advantage of social networking, Act 2010 now includes access to Facebook, Myspace, and other sites that you can add making online interaction easier. While there is no way to directly link a contact to a specific site, you still need to log in and search for them, the integration is a welcome relief and saves you the time of having to leave a contact window to look up information. If social networking is essential, this could be the killer feature that makes upgrading pressing.
Integration with Outlook, the business email client of choice, is tighter than ever, and integration with the Palm O.S. is sleek and easy. Another feature, it comes as standard with the program, is an a mass email marketing tool. Although automatically installed, it does require purchase to use this application.
For those considering an upgrade but have their eye aimed at the new Windows 7, the good news is Act works without issue in the new OS from Redmond. One should not run into any problems using the application, and installation on the test system used for this article was without incident.
In an interesting note, Outlook 2007’s own contact management software will not install under Windows 7.
Summation
For individuals looking for a powerful way to keep up with associates and contacts, those that have need for a more powerful way to keep in contact with large groups, Act 2010 provides a clean path to keeping disparate data collected in one very neat package. For small to medium sized business owners, Act 2010 this time around stands head and shoulders above the rest.
