No, Greg Dobbs is not really on the trade market. The Philadelphia Phillies enjoy the fact that Dobbs is skilled at multiple positions, in addition to his pinch-hitting abilities. But that hasn’t stopped the rumor mill from churning.
John McGrath, the Seattle Mariners beat writer for the Tacoma News Tribune, figures Dobbs could be the answer at the hot corner for the Mariners while Adrian Beltre is on the DL. Beltre will be gone for two months after elbow surgery.
McGrath believes the pitching surplus the Mariners currently have favors the team, and the Phillies have been in search of an arm. Dobbs is a former Mariner, having played there from 2004-2006 before joining the Phils as a free agent. It could be a match made in heaven should the Phillies decide they are desperate for pitching.
On the other hand, a great bat off the bench is far more important than a rental piece that would be around for a few months. McGrath tosses Miguel Batista’s name into the mix – he and his career 92-106 record. Batista is having a very solid year (4-2, 2.92 ERA in 29 games out of the bullpen), but is that enough for the Phillies to ship Dobbs out? The right-hander is 38 years old, and it could be assumed the Fightin’s would rather not take on another old arm. He is both a reliever and a starter (237 career starts) and could be the new long man.
Possibly a more intriguing name from Seattle is Jarrod Washburn. He is four years younger than Batista and his numbers are also decent. Washburn is 4-5 with a 3.22 ERA over 14 starts, and could be had should the M’s deem themselves out of the AL West race.
Of course, all of this is pure speculation, and it’s doubtful that Dobbs would be included in any trade. However, this all depends on how desperate each team is to upgrade at pitcher and third base, respectively.
