"It doesn’t feel right to make fun of crazy people."

- NY Times columnist Paul Krugman, on the Republican endorsed, April 15, anti-government spending rallies, popularly called Tea Parties

Whether they are crazy or not, Newt Gingrich, Dick Armey and the other GOP stars who organized - or otherwise endorsed - the 2009 Tax Day nationwide protests, managed to control the news cycle for the last two weeks. Their "grass roots" events even took over Fox News Channel, with four of their cable show hosts doing programs live from Tea Parties coast-to-coast.

Rep. Tom Price (R-GA) expressed the insistence of the Republican Study Committee, that "Today’s protests are a resounding statement that Americans have had enough." Price, who is chairman of the RSC, attended two rallies in Georgia today, including the one in Atlanta that attracted thousands.

Counter protests (or "sabotage", as Fox News Channel called it), however, never materialized, at least in Atlanta, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution. Even the "infiltrators" that Fox's Neil Cavuto warned about last week - from ACORN and The Huffington Post - did not "try to mix in and rain on this parade."

That does not mean rallies are not planned in support of the president and his policies. A posting on Atlanta's Craig's List politics page promotes a May event "to show support for President Obama."

President Obama met with middle-class families on Wenesday that he said "have had tough choices forced upon them because of this economic downturn."

"For too long, we've seen taxes used as a wedge to scare people into supporting policies that actually increased the burden on working people instead of helping them live their dreams," Obama said. "We've passed tax cuts that will help our economy grow.  We've given tax relief to the Americans who need it and the workers who have earned it.  And we're helping more Americans move towards their American Dream by going to school, owning a home, keeping their business and raising their family."
