Since scripting a movie from a book is called "adaptation," was there ever a movie with that title?

Yes.

Adaptation (2002) is inspired by Susan Orlean's non-fiction book, The Orchid Thief: A True Story of Beauty and Obsession. The movie is directed by Spike Jonze with the screenplay adapted by Charlie Kaufman and Donald Kaufman.  Interestingly, in 2003, the film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Writing, Adapted Screenplay.

The movie is about adapting a film from a true story.  However, there is a play on the term, "adaptation," in its biological sense since the true story being adapted is about a man who goes to the Florida Everglades to steal exotic and rare plants for underground dealers and collectors.
