Did the movie that won the most Oscars come from a book?

In a word, yes.

Ben-Hur won 11 Oscars in 1960 and was nominated for 12.  Ben-Hur was based on the novel, Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ, by Lew Wallace.  The movie was directed by William Wyler.

The only other movie that comes close was also adapted from a novel--The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, based on the fantasy books by J. R. R. Tolkien and directed by Peter Jackson.  That film won 11 Oscars in 2004 out of the 11 for which it was nominated. Ben-Hur was nominated for one more Oscar than King, which is what places it above it, though they won the same amount.
