The bestselling novel, My Sister's Keeper, by Jodi Picoult, has been made into a film starring Cameron Diaz, Abigail Breslin, Alec Baldwin, and Joan Cusack. The movie releases on Friday, June 26.


My Sister's Keeper is about a family of five that is living with an unusual situation. Sara and Brian Fitzgerald first have a daughter Kate and son, Jesse, and their lives seem perfectly normal. Then they learn that young Kate has leukemia. The only way to save Kate's life is to have another child for the specific purpose of serving as a medical donor for Kate's needs. The couple decides to go through with the procedure, and daughter Anna is conceived and brought into the world.
Anna and Kate are close sisters. Anna helps Kate until she is 11 years old, when she decides she has been in the hospital enough for her sister and refuses to do it anymore. Anna hires a lawyer to seek medical emancipation. This leads to a court case that threatens to divide the previously close-knit family.

The book raises ethical and moral questions that families have found themselves discussing together. The film promises to do the same.
