Appearing at the Cannes Film Festival this week, actor/musician Robert Pattinson confirmed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that he will appear in the adaptation of the fourth installment of Stephenie Meyer's Twilight saga: Breaking Dawn. Says Pattinson, "I have committed to the fourth one, Breaking Dawn. But I don't know quite when Summit is going to shoot it because of my schedule." Pattinson has previously noted that the series would have to be filmed in relatively short order since, in the books, the vampire characters do not age. One of the hallmarks of the film adaptations so far has been filmmakers' efforts to remain as faithful as possible to Meyer's story.
Breaking Dawn was published in 2008 and contains 768 pages. With two films between now and then yet to be completed, the question may seem farther away than it is as to how such a long popular novel will be adapted to the screen. Filmmakers adapting Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the seventh and last novel of that series, are attempting to solve a similar problem by making two films out of the last book. Will the same happen with Breaking Dawn, or will the never-aging vampire dilemma keep the conclusion to a single film only, trimmed to fit?
In the meantime, Mr. Pattinson keeps interest alive in the Twilight series as well as his own other film projects, by appearing at several venues at Cannes. Wednesday he walked the red carpet for the premiere of Quentin Tarantino's new film, Inglourious Basterds, starring Brad Pitt and Samuel L. Jackson.
