The Box, a new film starring Cameron Diaz, opens in theaters November 6, 2009. The film is based on a 1970 short story by Richard Matheson titled "Button, Button," that was later adapted into an episode of The Twilight Zone. James Marsden and Frank Langella co-star with Ms. Diaz.
The film is directed by Richard Kelly from a script he adapted.
The story is about a couple, played by Diaz and Marsden, who are living with their young child in suburban Virginia. The couple receives a simple wooden box as a gift. With the box comes a mysterious choice: Press the box's button and receive $1 million--at the same time, if you do press the button and receive $1 million, someone in the world you don't know will die. The couple has 24 hours to decide what to do.
The Box is described as a sci-fi thriller. It is rated PG-13 for thematic elements, some violence and disturbing images and runs 115 minutes.
