Ben McKenzie fans can breathe a sigh of relief. Atlanta based TNT announced today that it is picking up the former NBC drama “Southland”. TNT has struck a deal with Warner Bros. Television that will keep the edgy drama on the air. The network known for its powerful and provocative dramas will air the six episodes produced for this season.

Last month NBC announced the cancellation of “Southland” just two weeks before its scheduled season debut. The network cited concerns over its dark storyline. Apparently the show is a perfect fit for TNT. With shows like “The Closer” and “Dark Blue” the police drama will fit right in.

In a TNT press release Peter Roth, President of Warner Bros. Television said, “We are extremely pleased that TNT has acquired all 13 episodes of SOUTHLAND, giving devoted fans the opportunity to watch a show that they passionately support.”

“Southland” follows officers and detectives of the LAPD. Ben McKenzie (“The OC”) is a rookie cop, learning the ropes from his veteran partner played by Michael Cudlitz. Regina King is a female detective in a male dominated profession trying to find a balance between work and a developing personal life. Her partner played by Tom Everett Scott, is unhappily married and is looking for something or someone to get passionate about. Then there are the members of the gang unit, where the personal problems of the detectives often get in the way of arresting gang bangers. Kevin Alejandro plays a detective whose daughter has just learned the truth about him being her dad.

TNT will begin airing episodes of the first season of “Southland” on Tuesdays at 10 p.m. starting January 12. Ironically it will butt heads with “The Jay Leno Show”. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if the viewers tuning out from Leno, tune into “Southland”. It could happen.
