Restrict outdoor playtime between the hours of 10a.m. and 4p.m
Do not think just because it is a cloudy day your child can not get burned. Even in the shade, light can reflect its harmful rays. If your child has to be outdoors during these hours, make sure to apply sufficient sunscreen.
Apply sunscreen properly
You want to try to make sure you apply sunscreen to your child 30 minutes before going outdoors. Make sure you choose a sunscreen with SPF (Sun Protection Factor) 15 or higher. Stores now carry, scented and color sunscreens. The color sunscreens make for easier application, being you can see where the color is being applied. Do not miss some most commonly forgotten spots on the body such as; the nose, ears, hands, feet, shoulders, and behind the neck. Oh and lips too can burn, so apply a lip balm with SPF protection. You should reapply sunscreen every 2 to 3 hours, or after sweating or swimming. However, most sunblocks are water proof and sweat proof thus no need for re-application.
Always protect your kids skin
You can block harmful UV rays by being smart before you leave the house. Make sure that your child is wearing protective gear, such as hats and sunglasses. It is best to keep your child covered with dark colors (absorbs less sun), long sleeves, and pants whenever possible. When on the beach do not forget to bring along a large sun umbrella.
Be aware of medication reactions
Some medications increase the skin's sensitivity to the sun. Prescription antibiotics may be an increase for sensitivity. The best thing to do is ask your doctor if you have any questions or concerns about your child's possible reactions with the medications they may be taking.
Be a role model for your kids
You as a parent are the best role model for your kids. So do them and yourself the favor by covering up with sunscreen before heading out the door. The effects of the sun can bedetrimentall to your health and well being. So have fun this summer but always always remember the sunscreen
