Perhaps because my companion for the evening was unconventional in itself, we decided to slip into the Slipper Room on a Thursday night. T. and I had already had a couple drinks, and for five dollars each, we decided to take in a burlesque show. The bar is dark and sexy, and pretty empty. We chose to sit in a booth on the side, far away enough from the stage that we wouldn't risk being called out as some sort of a volunteer.
It wasn't as much of a burlesque show as it was a strip show for pudgy young women. I won't go into particulars, but there was a lot of nudity, bad jokes, cheap costumes and risque behavior. T. and I laughed and raised our eyebrows and cringed numerous times, but I think we enjoyed the show overall. At least, I did. The "performers" seemed to know that they were pathetic and they reveled in it. I hope I'm right--the idea that they took themselves seriously is sad. Although there was this one bit with strobe lights that actually looked very cool.
I don't suggest this place as a first date, but if both parties are up to it, it's a great way to get closer. It's you two against the shady elements in the bar, and you'll have a very strong memory and inside joke for the duration of your relationship.
The Slipper Room is located on Orchard and Stanton Sts. on the Lower East Side.
