My friend and I hadn't had a girl's night out in a very, very long time, so we decided to check out a bar she was thinking about choosing for her birthday party. The Skinny is located on 174 Orchard Street, close to Stanton Street. We were intent on scoring free drinks, although they were only six or seven dollars, a bargain for Manhattan. There were a lot of people there who seemed to know each other, so we just perched on chairs and observed all the customers. There was a tall, built man named Dan who tried to chat us up, but we ignored him. This happened with a few other men. The bar was very loud, fun but not rambunctious. The DJ seemed to be reading our minds--he played our favorite songs from the last few decades. Like Journey. We sang to Journey.
Finally, we decided to go up the set of stairs you see in the picture. We stood against the wall, talking to each other and pretending not to notice two guys looking at us. They said something to each other, and came over. The one who approached my friend had long brown hair, brown eyes and he worked for a newspaper in Hawaii, of all places. He was sensitive and bashful, unlike his friend, who approached me. The one who approached me had spiky brown hair and a way with words. He was an attorney, and he talked a lot more. Funnily enough, I would've been happy with either of them, but my friend preferred the one who spoke to me. We got drinks out of both of them, and ended up making out with them.
I think the mood of this bar definitely contributed to everyone's eagerness to chat. The music was perfect, even magical. Head to the Skinny for a lowkey but excellent time.
