Three of my favorite dates (all with different men) occurred at this restaurant in Astoria. I'm Cypriot, so I suppose I'm biased, but it really is an excellent restaurant. Astoria is known as Greektown, but it's slowly becoming much more diverse. Both dates began the same way. My date and I took the subway from Manhattan, which allowed us around 30 minutes to have nothing else to do except talk. Once we reached the restaurant, I spoke to the host in Greek, which probably impressed my date a bit. Without hesitation, we ordered the mezedes, which basically means that they bring us tasting plate after tasting plate. It's about $23 per person, which adds up to an appetizer and a main course anyway.
Plenty of non-Greeks patronize this restaurant, so don't feel intimidated by the foreign names on the menu. The waiters are very, very friendly (I flirt with them each time I'm there not on a date) and they'll be happy to explain everything to you. I recommend ordering wine with the mezedes. I usually pick a bottle of Ayios Onofrios, a mild red wine.
The restaurant is relatively small, but I've never had to wait for a table. My favorite feature of this restaurant by far is the outdoor seating. On one side of the restaurant is about seven tables. During the winter months, these tables are closed off with glass walls and a door. A huge space heater warms the patrons--it's actually warmer there than inside the restaurant.
The restaurant is located right off the Broadway stop of the N or W. Take it towards Uptown/Queens in Manhattan. The view over the 59th Street (Queensboro) Bridge is one of the most romantic and beautiful.
