Chris LaLanne’s courageous attempt to break his uncle Jack LaLanne’s 1959 record of 1,000 pull-ups and 1,000 pushups in 1 hour and 22 minutes may have fallen short, but it doesn’t mean Chris won’t try again.
With a crowd of friends and supporters jammed into the brickhouse on September 26 – the occasion of Jack’s 95th birthday – Chris was coasting along pretty well until his hands started to shred from the pull-ups. “At the 200 mark my hands started to bleed,” says Chris.
“The pushups were no problem, but the pull-ups were not well-thought out on my part. At number 350, my hands were shredded. I taped and re-taped my hands but decided to stop when I reached 500 pushups and 500 pullups in 1 hour and 28 minutes to save my hands.” Still, a remarkable achievement.
Will he attempt to beat Jack’s record again in the future? “Yes,” says Chris. Is it possible to finish? “Yes, again!” says Chris. Can he beat Jack’s record? “Maybe, maybe not.”
Jack’s comment? “Do something else. Be original – don’t be a copycat.” Still, records are made to be broken. Even the legendary Jack LaLanne’s. Someday, somehow. But it won’t be easy. Legends are not easy to displace – even when it’s in the family.
