With Michael Jackson news dominating...well...pretty much everything right now, it's no wonder that people are asking David Cook his opinion on the pop icon's passing. Most will remember David's stellar take on MJ's "Billie Jean" during Idol's season seven so, on top of weighing in on his death in my recent interview, he also gave his perspective to MTV. As David notes in the interview (which you can watch on his official web site), Michael "blew pop music wide open" for everyone else in the industry. He also talks about MJ's penchant for breaking cultural barriers, and how he has more influence than most of the world's leaders...sad, but true!
Interestingly enough, Billboard.com also posted a recent article on the post-mortem success of Michael's music, and the author points out a David Cook record that has since been broken:
Jackson places a record 25 songs on the 75-position Hot Digital Songs chart (21 solo hits and four with his siblings), smashing the mark of 14 charting titles established by David Cook in the June 7, 2008 issue. Jackson's Halloween radio staple, "Thriller," moves 167,000, which is good for second place on the chart behind the 203,000 shifted by the Black Eyed Peas' "I Gotta Feeling."
I'm not sure what's going outside San Diego radio, but I will say that I've heard David's rendition of "Billie Jean" quite a bit these days. If you haven't heard it, you should check out his stellar studio version of the MJ classic.
