Along with millions of other Madonna fans, I anxiously awaited the most comprehensive collection of Madonna songs and videos ever made. First, the two audio CD collection was a decent blend of Mo’s most notable tunes (chosen by fans); however, I felt there was an absence of one or two greats, but hey, you can’t satisfy everyone. The reasonably priced ($23.95) set boasted that the older songs were re-mastered and ergo, would sound a lot better. Not so much. I noticed very little, if any, difference. In fact, I would highly recommend, if you absolutely must have “Celebration” on your iPod, to do so by creating a song list on iTunes following the order of the tracks. The two songs created for the CD, “Celebration” and “Revolver” are good and not so good, respectively; both are available everywhere on the web.
Sadly, the two DVD set, the “must have” accompaniment to the audio set, will set you back another $24.95 and is NOT available in Blu-ray format. Sadly, I began watching it on my Blu –ray player on a plasma TV. It looked HORRIBLE, no other word to describe it; the videos did not even appear polished and even up-converting them did little to help. I eventually moved into my bedroom to finish watching the videos on my HDTV tube set with a regular DVD player. That did give the videos a better appearance, but ultimately, I can’t recommend this set either.
“Celebration: the Video Collection” boasted of never before seen footage and again, re-mastering. Well, the never before seen footage was not seen for a reason, and should have been left alone. In fact, with the exception of “Miles Away,” from Mo’s latest release, “Hard Candy,” was nothing more than her playing the guitar and performing live in concert. Don’t get me wrong, I am excited to see the full concert DVD of “Sticky and Sweet,” but this video just didn’t do it for me.
The video collection, however, cannot be discounted as much as the audio set as Madonna is a master of videos and was clearly one of the most ground breaking, influential artists ever. Watching them back to back, it was evident which ones took a lot of work (and money) to make and which ones didn’t. Although the quality and overall hype were a let down, it was fun to watch them all together. It just wasn’t nearly the tour de force Mo’s camp promised or, I should say, led us to believe to get us to buy the collection.
To send off the collection in its grand finale, we arrive at the “Celebration” video. Madonna looks amazing, albeit air brushed and lit appropriately, but the overall feel of the video and then the pathetic introduction to the incredibly hot but morbidly embarrassing to Madonna, Jesus Luz, make it a pitiful send off to a mediocre effort. In fact, Madonna actually put no effort into either the CD set or the DVD set, other than recording the two songs and the dancing in front of a blue screen for the video, she had nothing to do with this endeavor whatsoever, and it shows.
