The bidding was fast and furious, which only seemed appropriate.
In quick order, seven bikes ridden Lance Armstrong's career in key race in his career and all hand-painted by various famous artists were auctioned for a total of $1.255 million Sunday night at Sotheby's, the famed auction house in New York.
The money raised, the artists' creative efforts and the auction's time were all donated to Livestrong, Armstrong's cancer-fighting charity.
The bikes included a diverse sample of Trek machines, the time trial bike known as the "Stolen Bike" from the 2009 Tour of California prologue in Sacramento and road bike Armstrong rode onto the Champs Elysees.
Here's what Armstrong said via Twitter during the auction:
"Thank you to Sothebys for hosting us and donating ALL of their work to @livestrong. You rock!"
"1.3 mil raised for @livestrong!!! So incredibly humbling."
"Stolen Bike" goes for 130,000.00!!!
"The Newsom goes for 110,000.00!"
"KAWS goes for 160,000.00. Stunned."
"The Shep Fairey goes for 110,000.00!! This is insane."
"The NARA goes for 200,000.00!!! 200 grand!"
"The Kenny Scharf TT bike from the Giro goes for 45,000!!!"
The Hirst bike from the Champs Elysses goes for 500,000.00!!! Half a million
bucks!!!"
