
Gary Boulanger on BikeRadar.com reports a mountain bike museum created as the author writes, “to preserve and chronicle the evolution of the sport, its personalities and products” has opened in Statesville, N.C.
Constructed in conjunction with the celebration of the 30th anniversary of mountain biking, the facility is called Museum of Mountain Bike Art & Technology (MOMBAT).
According to Boulanger, the museum’s collection includes features 250 mountain bikes among the more than 400 bicycles on display.
“Hundreds of vintage parts and accessories and thousands of pieces of literature, including period catalogs and magazines that follow the evolution of the sport,” are also displayed.
Among the collection is a sample of the first mass produced mountain bike, the Specialized Stumpjumper, which debuted in retail stores in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1982.
The museum is located within First Flight Bicycles in historic downtown Statesville, N.C. Admission is free and the museum is open to the public Monday-Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. www.mombat.org
