In what could foreshadow as a regular occurance for the regular season, the Rockets won a shootout against the Toronto Raptors, 124-112, in Houston’s fifth pre-season game.
A few thoughts about the game:
Shane Battier is an offensive juggernaut. Well, “juggernaut” is a bit strong. Nevertheless, he was stellar Thursday. He led all scorers with 26 points, and made eight — count ‘em eight — 3-pointers. He was in the figurative “zone”. It shouldn’t come as a common occurrence during the regular season, but it’s nice to see such a good guy have such an amazing performance.
Trevor Ariza showed glimpses of what he can do in the Rockets’ rotation. His best offensive performance of the short pre-season, Ariza (18 pionts, 7-of-12) was effective from all over the court, and contributed four assists along with two steals.
Lowry is battling Brooks for playing time. Granted Brooks is the starter and the more prolific scorer, but Lowry had an all-around good performance. He’s apparently the more “natural point guard” (that’s code for “pass-first”). While it doesn’t seem Brooks’ starting job is in jeopardy, Lowry could potentially siphon minutes away from Brooks, or Adelman could use a really smart backcourt for extended periods.
Pops Mensah-Bonsu is a name to remember. He won’t be a starter, but after an 8-of-9 shooting night, PMB certainly will get more attention in the upcoming games.
The defense is, well, lackluster. Anytime, in any scenario when your opponent shoots greater or equal to 50%, it’s some cause for alarm. But again, it’s only pre-season.
