Recently technology giants Google and Hewlett-Packard, along with Amazon.com entered the digital books arena. What this means is that for a fee, you can find and download a plethora of digital book titles online.
In our digital-age society this is a great way to encourage people of all walks of life to read in a culture constantly on the go. Even more critical is the role this plays for young people making access to books a lot easier than visiting a local public or university library to find and check out a title or purchasing such at a local bookstore.
Not only are digital books becoming popular, but audiobooks, too, are beginning to come into their own. As with digital books, audiobooks also costs per download- and titles are not as numerous as their digital copied counterparts.
Some internet sites, such as audiobooks.com, Amazon.com and librivox.org offer free and some cost-based audiobook downloads online.
What a great way to persuade the young to pick up and read a digital book on a computer or to listen to an audiobook using an MP3 player. Reading is paramount in the learning and educative process. As educators, we can’t close our eyes to methodologies that are on par with the digital-minded students we serve each day.
