Having the great pleasure of using Windows 7.0 Professional now for several weeks prior to its release date, I continue to enjoy the platforms speed and efficiency. Some refreshing enhancements from Vista include a more sophisticated Paint program, a snipping tool that allows you to capture any image, text or object whether you are online or working locally and an easy to use “connect to a projector” feature when you need to hook up to an LCD projector.
One feature missing from Windows 7.0 is Movie Maker. I have long enjoyed this great tool as it has in the past provided me with an easy way to create awesome videos with little frustration and effort. Further, students in my classes often used Movie Maker for class projects.
With no immediate plans in sight to offer a Windows 7.0 version of Movie Maker, there are several options available, though I suggest doing your research prior to selecting one.
Option 1: You can keep using Windows XP as your platform of choice, though no more updates will be issued from Microsoft. In short, Windows XP has reached its shelf-life.
Option 2: You can keep using Windows Vista, which includes a version of Movie Maker. Microsoft will continue to provide updates for this monster, resource hog, though the big push is for users to move to the awesome Windows 7.0.
Option 3: You can download a Windows Vista version of Movie Maker that is said to be compatible with Windows 7.0. However, I caution users on this move.
Option 4: Create a Windows Live account (it’s free). Then visit Windows Live and use the somewhat virtual, though limited Windows Movie Maker that is compatible with Windows 7.0. There are also other Windows Live programs available to download for free including Writer (a blogging tool), photo gallery (which can work in conjunction with the Windows Live version of Movie Maker) and a Family Safety web browsing tool.
Change is inevitable. Being flexible and adjusting to such change is a part of life. As we approach the official Windows 7.0 release date, let’s keep an open mind to the good things to come for those who wait. With Christmas around the corner, I’m hoping that Santa Gates will grant my wish. Yes, a fully loaded and functional version of Windows 7.0 Movie Maker.
