A salute to special education

Special education is defined by Merriam-Webster as classes or instruction designed for students with special educational needs.

Today we celebrate National Special Education Day. In a special way, I wish to thank the countless dedicated educators across this great country for working in this challenging, yet rewarding area of education.
Special education hits home with me and my immediate family. I have three Down’s syndrome uncles living in residential settings in Clinton, Iowa. Though growing up with special challenges, each of them benefited greatly from special education public school programs. Even after finishing their traditional schooling, they continued working in special programs where they benefited society, working several hours each day, and earning income, too.
I remember as a young child visiting my uncles during the summer. I remember fondly their simplicity, their love for life, their warm smiles, their compassion, and their unique intelligence.
Sadly this past December, nearly one year ago today, I attended the funeral for one of my uncles, David Miller. I was asked to speak a bit about David, as a representative of my family and on behalf on my father who was unable to attend the service due to health issues. As I looked into the crowded church, I shared with those gathered my fondest memories of my uncle. Then, one by one, nearly twenty more of David’s special friends, shared their memories, some by word, others by song. I realized then just how blessed my uncle was, having lived in such a wonderful community with individuals having the same gifts and talents. What a blessing!
I share this story on National Special Education Day to shed light on just how important special education programs are. In a time when education funding is being cut from state to state, which directly affects many school programs, and in light of President elect Obama preparing to name his U.S. Secretary of Education, let us all be mindful of just how important education is for all walks of life, regardless of the cost.
