As budget fashionistas we can all relate to the need to shop and find fabulous fashions while sticking to a budget. But, every now and then, the best fashion finds are completely free. This past weekend at the VMAs (also known as “that show where Kanye interrupted Taylor”) there were plenty of fashion lessons that stylistas everywhere could stand to learn – whether on a budget or not. Here are a couple ways that you can translate those lessons into your wardrobe for less.
Lesson #1: Be Daring
Lady Gaga is nothing if not daring. While this article is in no way encouraging you to don a red, lace face mask or bleeding torso ensemble, it is encouraging you to be daring and make a statement. Not ready for a gothic inspired leather outfit? Try a statement necklace like this Flower Necklace from Urban Outfitters for only $48.00. Or, go for a pair of bold earrings like the Far Out Far East earring from Bebe.
Lesson #2: Have a Sense of Humor
Pink and Shakira ended up wearing the exact same outfit to the VMAs. What did they do? Sidled up to each other, smiled big and posed for the camera. Now, you may not find yourself in the same outfit as someone else on the red carpet. However, there are some other ways to display your “cheeky” sense of humor – like these cute undies from Lolly 38.

Lesson #3: Be Confident
J. Lo, Taylor Swift and Beyonce all have more than music in common. These two divas and one diva in training strutted their down the red carpet with confidence, ease and grace. This is a fashion statement that can be made for absolutely nothing. Stand tall, pull your shoulders back, pick your chin up, take long, strong strides and walk down every hallway, sidewalk and aisle way like they’re your own personal runway. You just instantly made your outfit look more expensive and yourself look like a million bucks. You can get this look for $0 at a mirror near you.
Good luck turning these VMA fashion lessons into real-life functional fashion.
Remember, shop smart, not hard.
