Pumpkin picking, it's time!

Fall harvests are ready for the hunter and gatherer to start their journey into the pumpkin patch. There are many farms and farm shops in the upstate New York region that cater to this crowd especially around this time of the year. Pumpkin picking not only gets you a big, jolly, round orange pumpkin, it gets you out doors at one of the most beautiful times of the season. If you wait much longer you will not have a lot of time to enjoy the benefits of a giant orange orb decorating your front stoop.
Farm shops frequently visited by locals in the region range from the “side of the road” garden center laying out the last of their goods, to the full blown farm “pick your own’ extravaganza. One of my favorites is just off of the Taconic State parkway about an hour from New York City. Barton Orchards in Fishkill Farms is a must for those seeking the ultimate Fall experience. Hay rides; a large detailed corn maze and vegetable fields await the eager weekend visitor. Another good stop on route is Meyer’s Farm shop. This small apple orchard has so many wonderful offerings including fresh donuts and cider.
If you can’t make it out toany of these destinations this fall you can try your local food market where there is sure to be stock on pumpkins of the cooking kind. Don’t forget that pumpkins are not only for the fun of it but for the gourmet in you too.
