NFL linebacker Shawne Merriman arrested, accused of choking MTV's Tila Tequila

NFL linebacker Shawne Merriman has been arrested for allegedly choking and restraining his girlfriend and MTV reality star Tila Tequila, police said in a statement today.
Responding to a domestic disturbance call at 3:45 a.m. Sunday, police arrived and "the reporting party identified herself as Tila Nguyen, aka Tila Tequila, and her alleged assailant as Shawne Merriman," the statement said.
"Nguyen told deputies she had been choked and physically restrained by Merriman when she attempted to leave his residence," the statement said.
Tequila signed a citizens arrest at the scene, and Merriman was arrested on suspicion of battery and false imprisonment, according to the statement.
Just less than an hour ago, Chargers General Manager A.J. Smith released the following statement:
“It’s disappointing to hear about the issue involving Shawne Merriman. We’ll continue to monitor the situation and let the legal process run its course.”
The Chargers open the NFL season a week from Monday, against the Oakland Raiders. Tequila is most known for her MTV dating show A Shot At Love with Tila Tequila.
Tequila also recently posed for the NOH8 Campaign, a silent protest in favor of gay-marriage.
