Diane Sawyer sat down with singer Rihanna to discuss the aftermath of February 8th, the fateful night when then-boyfriend Chris Brown assaulted the "Umbrella" singer. The interview will air in full on Friday on "20/20," but a portion of the conversation debuted on "Good Morning America" on Thursday.
In the interview, Rihanna talks about how she soon realized that how she responded to Chris Brown's assault sent a message to her young female fans.
“When I realized that my selfish decision for love could result into some young girl getting killed, I could not be easy with that part,” she told Diane Sawyer on "Good Morning America.”
“I couldn’t be held responsible for telling them, ‘Go back.’ Even if Chris never hit me again, who’s to say that their boyfriend won’t? Who’s to say they won’t kill these girls?”
Chris Brown was sentenced to five years' probation and community service for assaulting Rihanna.
Rihanna reiterated that while she understands that she's a role model for young women, she's also imperfect.
“I’m a human being, and people put me on a very unrealistic pedestal. All these expectations--I’m not perfect.”
