Former Vice President Dick Cheney is supporting Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison in the Texas Governor's race, continuing a political tennis match in which the Senator and Gov. Rick Perry go back and forth lining up key endorsements for next year's contest.
The endorsement by Cheney, seen by many as a leader in the conservative movement, will bolster Hutchison's appeal to the right wing of the Republican party that have largely supported Perry in the past.
Notable Republicans of statewide and national prominence are choosing sides in the hotly-contested governor's race, with most Washington insiders backing Hutchison and most local and state officials backing Perry.
Gov. Perry has a number of key endorsements of his own, including Sarah Palin, T. Boone Pickens, and Phyllis Schlafly. In addition to a long list of congressmen and women supporting her, Hutchison also picked up the endorsement of the Texas Farm Bureau recently, which could bring the votes of many in the state's rural communities. Perry has earned a number of endorsements from civic and social groups as well, including Texas Right to Life.
While the impact of these endorsements has yet to be measured, recent polls do show Hutchison closing the gap Perry has held over her.
