An article on the msnbc website from Wed. 5/27/09 reports that a winged kitten was born in Chongqing, China. It looked perfectly normal until later when, at one year old, it developed some boney growths with fur on it's back that resemble wings.

Over the past few years there have been several reports of such winged cats. What causes this abnormal condition is not quite clear. Some speculate that it may be some kind of mutation while others think it may be an incomplete siamese twin growing within the kitty. It could also be a genetic change caused by the mother cat ingesting some sort of chemicals during pregnancy. Or perhaps it is the result of some abnormal skin condition.

Another article suggested that bad grooming habits may have been at fault. I seriously doubt that is the case here. Bad grooming may account for some large sections of matted fur but it could in no way explain abnormal bone appendages.

While those mutant cats look like they have wings, they are not able to fly.
