Mayoral elections are approaching, so you know what that means! Bloomberg is gloating about how he has transformed the city's educational system and the other guy, William C. Thompson Jr, is questioning everything Bloomberg and Klein are boasting about. Primarily the increase in the graduation rates and test scores.
In an audit released yesterday, Thompson claimed that schools are keeping sloppy records of their students, and that some graduating seniors, in fact, did not complete all of their graduation requirements.
He goes on to claim that the current state of the our education system encourages cheating and manipulation. He is questioning standardized tests and the inflation in graduation rates. Finally, he has said, "Joel Klein should be fired. It's as simple as that."
What we have here is political campaigning at its finest, but I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss his audit as nothing more than strategic timing.
I work in the system and I'm biting my tongue not to say all the things that I want to say. All I will say is that I enjoy having a steady paycheck, so I'll take the fifth on this one.
