If you've been anywhere near a radio in the last ten years, I'd bet the house that the gravelly whine of Chad Kroeger has permeated your eardrums on more than one occasion.
Seriously, has any modern rock outfit had their catalog played ad nauseum more than Canada's own Nickelback?
You couldn't even walk into a restaurant bathroom in 2005 without hearing the cotton candy drone of "Photograph," so I have to believe that when they hit the Darien Lake stage tonight, the reception will be nothing less than raucous.
Personally, I've always found them to be a radio-friendly group whose bombastically overproduced oeuvre ran out of gas long ago, but I also understand why audiences feel otherwise.
The guitar sounds mean, the stage shows are explosive and the lyrics are often more provocative than a Sunday afternoon Lifetime marathon.
But after that, how much substance is really there to be consumed?
They've almost become a victim of the sordid state of the music industry, because the faster their albums fly off shelves, the less likely it is that they'll ever realize how much their songs resemble one another â la Blink 182.
Anyway, their traveling rock circus rolls into town tonight with Hinder, Papa Roach and Saving Abel sharing the bill and, for all I know, it could turn out to be an energetic evening that deserves further discussion.
Then again, maybe not.
The concert starts at 6:00 p.m. and is sold out.
