I4NI at Finnan's in Lockport

I know people say that cover bands are a dime a dozen, but if you're someone who frequents any of the local summer festivals, you'll undoubtedly be exposed to them at one time or another.

Because of their popularity, I decided to compose a short list of bands that have managed to separate themselves from the pack and emerge as top-tier musicians in the Western New York area.

There's a certain art to composing a great cover band, because you want to do justice to the song as well as promote your own melodic virtuosity, so after much deliberation, I deemed the following five bands to be the best of the best.

Black Widow - Without a doubt Buffalo's premier hard rock cover band. There's nothing that vocalist Lana Marie can't do on stage and she seems to get better with each passing year. With a set list ranging from Finger Eleven to K.C. and the Sunshine band, the band is given countless opportunities to exhibit their versatility and, believe me, they never disappoint.

Hit N Run - Vocalists Mark Valentino (Think a cross between Steve Perry and Rik Emmett) and Kelly Wahl are pure poetry in motion as they deliver the goods and rarely hit an off note. Also, guitarist Dan Kaplin used to play with Black Widow and Metalworks, so you know he can melt faces when necessary.

Suckerpunch - If you're a fan of '90s alt-metal, you'll love these guys, because they're willing to tap into music that not too many other bands bother with. They've been a mainstay at Macaroon's through the years, so it's safe to say they won't be going away any time soon.

I4NI - You probably haven't heard of this hard-edged Lockport quintet, but I suggest you seek them out sometime soon. They do spot-on performances of "Master of Puppets," "War Pigs," and Godsmack's "The Enemy" and are one of the few cover bands that isn't afraid to go deep into the heavy metal universe for inspiration.

Strictly Hip - Technically, they're a tribute band, but if you love "The Tragically Hip" as much as I do, they're as close to the real thing as you can get without actually seeing Gord and the boys.
