Some 200 or so people rallied at Newport News' City Center Saturday, protesting recent federal government actions including various bailouts and a proposed Cap and Trade bill.

Marshall Smith said the mass media doesn't understand that the Tea Parties are about the Constitution. He said people "are starting to realize maybe we shouldn't have voted for this guy," referring to President Barack Obama.

Smith, who organized a Tea Party in Virginia Beach on April 15, said more than 600 tea parties were scheduled for the Fourth of July, including 57 in California.

Smith encouraged citizens to call the eight Republican representatives who voted for the Cap and Trade bill. "Wear their phone lines out," he said.

An unidentified woman speaker lauded Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, which drew cheers from the crowd. "She's going to talk to the people," the woman said.

A gentleman who drove from Richmond for the event said he did it for one reason. "I'm pissed off," he said. "I have been pissed, and I'm going to stay pissed," which drew a number of chuckles.
