House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer confirmed today that the Democrats are still short of the necessary 218 votes to pass a $1.05 trillion health care reform bill.
Flareups among Democrat Party members over abortion and illegal immigrants obtaining health care could prove dicey as it gets down to "crunch time."
A vote could be pushed off into Saturday, Sunday or even early next week, Hoyer said.
The last-minute push is proving difficult because wavering Democrats are still on the fence - and no Republicans are expected to back the bill. http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1109/29236.html
A number of moderate-to-conservative Blue Dog Democrats could pose an obstacle for the Democrat majority, given Republican pickups of governors' seats in Virginia and New Jersey this week. The Blue Dogs may be nervous about any potential payback at the polls in 2010 should they support a bill that is unpopular in their home districts.
If all Republicans oppose the bill, the Democrats could afford to lose only 40 of their members on the vote.
