The morning after 'Survivor: Tocantins' named awarded its latest winner, JT Thomas, one million dollars, news came that a previous winner has a rare form of Hodgkins Diseases. Ethan Zohn, who won 'Survivor: Africa,' was diagnosed with stage two of the disease on April 30 and is currently undergoing an aggressive round of treatment.
Zohn and his girlfriend, fellow 'Survivor' winner Jenna Morasca, have both lost parents to cancer. Zohn's father died of colon cancer when he was 14. Morasca's mother passed away from breast cancer in 2003. Morasca famously left the game of 'Survivor' because of her worry about her mother's health and shortly after her return, her mother died (Morasca later returned to Survivor on a different season).
Zohn's cancer was discovered after months of itching and night sweats which were thought to be a skin condition. Further testing showed a swollen lymph node and a CT scan revealed a mass on the left side of his chest. Zohn was given the news that he has CD20-positive Hodgkin's Lymphoma, which affects about five percent of all Hodgkin's patients. The survival rate is 90 percent when caught early but given this rare form of the disease, Zohn will be treated with altered and more aggressive form of chemotherapy. He has already begun treatment.
As one might expect, Zohn is frightened but positive. He and Morasca are vowing to fight this together. "Our only point of reference with this situation is death," Morasca told People magazine. Zohn told the magazine, "You have to get spiritual about this [stuff]. I know I want to help people and inspire people. That's my purpose in life. So I need to use this as a platform."
Since winning his million dollars, Zohn started a soccer charity called Grassroot Soccer that works to raise money and awareness for AIDS relief in Africa. His treatment is expected to last three months and will take a toll on his body (yes, he'll lose his famous curly hair). He's said he's facing this like the game of 'Survivor,' and that he's "not getting voted out of this one."
