Teaching a teenager to drive is as much a rite of passage for the parent as it is for the kid. But who does it better? Mom or dad? According to a survey from AA Driving School in England, the answer is dear old dad. In their very unscientific poll of 1,387 adults, 52 percent said fathers were better at the difficult task, while only 24 percent thought moms were better at the job.
So what exactly are parents doing when they teach their kids to drive?
19% of parents stamp their foot on an imaginary brake pedal while the teen is driving
15% make the teen just pull over so the parent can drive
14% of parents swear while their teen is driving
14% grabbed the arm rest out of fear
27% said moms tend to panic more than dads
39% said dads get mad quicker than moms
My own daughter is years from learning to drive- we just finished up potty training! But I have strong memories of my own experiences. My mother first took on the job, but quickly passed it off to my dad when her knuckles became white from gripping the arm rest. My dad, who has always been calm, remained remarkably so while he taught me to drive. I remember one incident when we were driving on the UW campus for practice, and as I was coming around the HUB, I became distracted by all the students. My father very calmly and persistently repeated the words "stop sign" about seven times, never raising his voice, until it finally sunk in that I was about to careen past one. I screamed and slammed on the brakes, just in time to stop at the crosswalk. My father simply said, "Good job. You saw the stop sign." I guess I would vote for dad, too.
