Ann Coulter promotes her new book by attacking single moms

Ann Coulter

There are some people in this world that, despite their public persona, you can still find a shred of decency in. Not Ann Coulter. I have tried to find a reason not to loathe this woman with all my being, but she's not helping her case. The more Ann talks and writes, the more I cringe and wonder why anyone not only listens to her skewed ramblings but purchases them as well. Coulter's latest written and verbal assault is particularly disgusting: she's blaming single moms for a host of criminal activities that include rape and murder.

While promoting her latest book, Guilty: Liberal 'Victims' and Their Assault on America, Coulter has been making more enemies than friends. Last week, after ranting about allegedly being 'banned' from NBC, she showed up on the Today Show and told Matt Lauer that the liberal media exalts the single mom, despite the fact that most teenage mothers, runaways, murderers, and rapists can be traced back to them. 'All societal problems can be traced back to single mothers, 'she says. And yes, she's serious and unrepentant in her view. Lauer told her that these claims were 'outrageous' to which Coulter replied, 'It's not outrageous, it's a fact.'

She continued her book tour/attack with an appearance on The View this morning, where four of  the five hosts are single moms. When asked what her 'issue with single moms is' by Whoopi Goldberg, Coulter responded by saying that there are decades of research that say criminals, rapists, murderers, and rapists are raised by single moms. Matt Lauer may have been afraid to speak his mind but Whoopi, Joy, Sherri, Barbara, and even Elisabeth at times, certainly weren't. Coulter was given a sound tongue lashing from the hosts, who wanted to know why she doesn't blame the fathers that weren't around and told that if she had children (which Coulter does not) that maybe should know more about what she was talking about. At one point, Coulter was told by Sherri Shepherd that she lacks compassion and asked if she ever went out to talk to young girls about birth control instead of 'just judging, judging, judging.' Oh, Sherri - judging is what Ann Coulter does best! Nice question, anyway. Coulter said, 'yes, of course' but failed to elaborate.

As you might anticipate, single mothers everywhere have been protesting Coulter's words. United in rage, single moms are taking to blogs and airwaves to respond to Coulter and give her a piece of their minds. The L.A. Times Blogs posted an open letter from a single mom named Rachel Sarah, who happens to be a popular blogger and takes Coulter to task for her latest comments. 'Dear Ann,' writes Rachel. 'Do you mind if I call you by first name? I wouldn't want to insult you. After all, I'm a single mom and the cause of every societal problem out there today. It's clear that you've studied us for years, with all those surveys you compiled for your recent book, "Guilty: Liberal 'Victims' and Their Assault on America." But I'm not sure how many of us you've spoken to in real life?' Message boards and blogs have become a forum for parents, all types of parents, to sound off about Coulter's incredulous claims.

I am not a single mother but I am certainly offended by Coulter's remarks. I know how hard I work as a mother, and I have a husband who does his fair share, too. If the 'liberal media' have exalted  single mothers it is because single mothers have earned it. They work their butts off day and night taking care of their children, earning a living, and running a household. Callous musings like Coulter's demean the hard work and sacrifice that single mothers make daily, and for what? A few headlines and book royalties?

The problem is, Coulter loves it. You know what they say, there's no such thing as bad publicity. Unfortunately, Coulter's latest in a long line of controversial outbursts is selling her books and putting pennies in her pockets. Pennies, mind you, she wouldn't be  handing out to anyone in need. It doesn't bother Coulter if you don't like her and as surprising as it might be, the lady (and I use that term lightly) does have quite a few fans. I'm just not one of them.
