Many people think that Santa Claus keeps his reindeer in the North Pole, but they're wrong; Santa actually chose Cougar Mountain Zoo in Issaquah as the residence for his beloved sleigh team. Each December, to thank the zoo, Santa and his reindeer welcome the public to attend the annual Issaquah Reindeer Festival. How Santa finds the time to visit Issaquah during his most busy time is beyond me; maybe he has a secret workshop somewhere close by, too!
If you haven't been to the Cougar Mountain Zoo, December is a great time to go. The Reindeer Festival is your chance to get up close and personal with all of Santa's reindeer, from Dasher to Rudolph! Enjoy watching the reindeer graze in their yard as they start storing energy for their big night while you walk to Santa's house. You can have a quick visit with St. Nick to whisper those important holiday wishes or drop a letter to him in his personal mailbox! Then enjoy the ultimate experience - what good are the reindeer if they don't have a sleigh? Your kiddos can sit in the Grand Traveling Sleigh that Santa himself drives each year! If your little one enjoys stories, there's even an opportunity to listen as an Elf leads storytime.
There are plenty of holiday activities to keep you busy at Cougar Mountain Zoo, but there are also lots of animals to visit, too. There are lemurs, cougars (naturally), wallabies, macaws, and much more. In addition, you can also take in the amazing scenery that the zoo offers; possibly some of the best views in Puget Sound. So strap the kids in the car and head to Issaquah to visit Santa Claus and his reindeer! Ho ho ho!
