Cinco de Mayo is coming, and that means you have an opportunity to do some really fun crafts with your kiddo. This is also a great chance to discuss cultural diversity and introduce your child to a new holiday. Here are 10 easy, yet very entertaining, crafts to do. Simply click on the title of the project for complete directions.
Maracas - kids love to make music and maracas are easy to make and fun to shake! You'll need paper or styrofoam cups, some red, tan, and white paint, decorations like pom poms or stickers, and some dried beans. Once the project is done, your kiddo will be making music all day!
Paper plate maracas - another maracas craft but with paper plates (hence the title) it might be easier for younger kids. You'll just need paper plates, dried beans, a stapler, crayons, markers, stickers, and ribbon. Very easy, very quick, but plenty of longlasting entertainment.
Mini sombreros - this craft is a little more complex so it might be better suited for older children and you'll need to do some prep work ahead of time. You'll need a paper plate, a styrofoam or paper cup, some felt, pom poms, felt, glue, and other items. The finished product is very cute and makes a great table decoration!
Pinatas - sure, you're essentially making a craft just to destroy it but still, it's lots of fun! There's a fairly long list of items needed for this craft but you already own most of them, except for red, green, and white crepe paper. As an added bonus for your kiddos, buy Mexican candies to put inside the pinata!
Mexican place mats - this might be my favorite. You'll need one large piece of construction paper (18" by 12"), 16 strips of construction paper (12" by 1") in varying colors, scissors, a ruler, a pencil, and glue. Kids will weave the construction paper to make a festive place mat. It's a fun activity, so why not make enough for everyone in the family? You can use them during your Cinco de Mayo dinner!
Mini God's eyes - this craft requires yarn, craft sticks, and glue. There's a simple diagram that shows how to wrap the yarn around the sticks. It's a pretty craft and if your kiddo wants, he or she can unwrap it and start over.
Wearable sombrero - ok, this one is a little more time consuming and will also require adult assistance. However, the end result is cute and your child will love wearing his own sombrero.
Hot pepper paper craft - this is an easy craft for younger kids that, when completed, gives them a hot pepper with a face. Print out a template, color it, glue on the eyes and mouth, and you have a cute little hot pepper.
Box guitar - I like this one a lot, too. It's also made from items you have around your home already, like tissue paper boxes or shoe boxes, a paper towel or gift wrap roll, and rubber bands. When it's done, your kiddo can jam and make some music.
