Sometimes charities can feel a little distant, and that can make it hard to feel like you've made a real difference. I suggest checking out www.DonorsChoose.org .
Here is how it works. A teacher has a need for something specific in the classroom, for example, a kit to allow low-income kids to make podcasts of their poetry . The teacher writes up a request listing how much money is needed, what it will be used for, grade level, the poverty level of the kids in the classroom, and more. You then visit the website, select the state in which you want to find a teacher to help. Scroll through the proposals and find one you like. Then give as much as you feel comfortable giving. Multiple people can give to the same teacher until the project is funded. Everyone who donates will get an email from the teacher saying thank you. Plus, if you donate $100 or more, or if your donation finishes off the funding, you will get a "thank you package" in the mail, with photos and hand-written cards. On top of that, no matter how much you give, it is tax-deductible.
DonorsChoose.org is funded by the Gates Foundation, and has a rating of 4 stars from Charity Navigator, which means it is a solid program you can trust.
What a fantastic and easy way to make a difference for kids. Check it out!
