Even though summer vacation is firmly behind us, there is no reason to leave family trips behind, as well.  A good weekend roadtrip can break up the work and school weeks- and in our area, there are plenty of great options for an easy drive to some fun destinations.  About 3 hours from Seattle, Smallwood's Harvest Farm in Peshastin and the Bavarian world of Leavenworth make a great weekend roadrtip, especially in the fall and winter when pumpkins and snow decorate the landscape.

Smallwood's Harvest Farm is located in Peshastin, WA, just at the end of Highway 97, in Central Washington.  The farm is a full-service destination, including lodging, food, and entertainment.  You can stay right on the farm in the "Old Farm House,"  which doesn't actually look like a farm house, but it is located in the middle of the pear orchard, which gives it a quiet, away-from-it- all feel.  The Old Farm House has all the amenities you need, including 2 bedrooms, a bathroom, big tv, wi-fi access, and a fully furnished kitchen.  You can also choose to stay at any of the places in the little town of Peshastin, right across the river from the farm.

The farm itself is full of activities to keep families entertained.    A petting zoo with dozens of animals to say hello to and feed, including llamas, sheep, pigs, goats, and peacocks.  A prop maze let's everyone get lost and found, and there is plenty of space for picnics and playtime, with swings and horseshoes, among many other pursuits.  And for the daring, try the "cow train," a chain of cow-painted barrels on wheels pulled behind a tractor- you might think it would be slow, but you would be mistaken!

On the way home, drive back to the Seattle-area on Highway 2 and stop in at the Bavarian-themed town of Leavenworth.  By law, every building in this mountain city must be in the style of a German town, right down to the McDonalds.  During the holidays there are tree lighting ceremonies, carolers, even sleigh rides  and dog sledding  .  It makes for a great stop on the trip back, breaking up the 3 hour drive nicely.
