A recent study released by the Pew Charitable Trust states that the number of green jobs in the United States grew 9.1 percent between 1998 and 2007, about two and a half times faster than job growth in the economy as a whole.
Of particular local interest in this report was the impact of clean energy job creation in California. According to the Pew study, California led the nation in all categories measured. In 2007, clean energy attracted 125,390 jobs and 10,208 business start-ups to the Golden State. On the investment side, from 2006 to 2008, California's green start-ups attracted nearly $6.6 billion in Venture Capital investments, about five times greater than runner-up Massachusetts.
As expected, California's 125,390 green job creation far outpaced runner-up Texas which generated a respectable 55,000 new green jobs in 2007.
California's Green Numbers:
New Jobs (2007) 125,390
New Business (2007) 10,209
Venture Capital Investments $6.6 billion
Clean Energy Patents 1401
These 21st century clean energy jobs pay anywhere from $20,000 to more than $100,000 a year for various positions ranging from clerks and construction workers to scientists, engineers and skilled craftsman.
