Illegal Immigration is a hot topic in Utah. Whether people support amnesty or enforcement of immigration laws, preventing the cause of illegal immigration should be something both sides agree on. As previously reported 1.3 million farmers in Mexico lost their livelihood and their land after NAFTA was past, and in the years that followed the illegal immigration rate increased by 60%.
Just last week the UK Guardian reported the Indians of Peru had won a stand off over their land after 30 to 50+ people had died. This was after a standoff to keep oil companies, mining companies, and large scale-farming operations out of the Amazon rain forest. The standoff lasted for months.
The proclaimed victory appears to be a short one. A UK based human rights organization Survival-International.org has reported an Anglo-French company Preneco has bin given a contract to drill in the Amazon. Not only is there fear the Indians will be displaced by loss of land, loss of wildlife and contaminated water, but there is a fear they will be introduced to diseases they have never been exposed to before.
