During her 20/20 interview with Diane Sawyer, Rihanna talked about the assault incident that occurred between her and Chris Brown. She said that what started out as an argument between the two escalated into domestic abuse. This is not the first time that Rihanna has witnessed an incident with domestic violence. In the emotional interview, Rihanna revealed that her mother was abused by her father.

Rihanna said that she is glad that Chris Brown assaulted her because now she can help young girls who are going through similar situations. This bring us to a very important point: how to help yourself if you find that you are in Rihanna’s situation. If domestic abuse is something which is affected you in any way, the best thing that you can do for yourself is get out of the situation.

1. Find the Strength to Leave

In the 20/20 interview, Rihanna said she had a hard time leaving Chris Brown because despite the fact that he had abused her, she still cared about him. The best thing that you can do is take the advice that Rihanna gave to those in similar situations in her interview. Rihanna said, “I will say to any girl going through domestic violence, ‘Come out of this. Look at third person for what it really is’” (Yahoo Music Blogs). Being honest with yourself is really the best thing that you can do if you want to find the strength to get out of a domestic abuse situation.

3. Reach Out to Friends and Family

Rihanna said that there were times when she felt very alone. She did not talk about Chris Brown’s assault on her with anyone. While you may feel better about not discussing it, the best thing that you can do is reach out to friends and family. Spending time with people who care about you is a great way to prevent yourself from wanting to go back. During the 20/20 interview with Rihanna, we learned that most women will go back seven or eight times before they leave.

What happened to Rihanna could happen to you. The best thing that you can do is learn from the musician, and help get yourself out of any abusive situation that you may be in.
